I have no words

This article talks about how a recent poll found that 25% of American adults surveyed did not read a single book last year.

I can’t even add anything to that.

I’m not sure why that surprises you. I LOVE reading; but for some, it’s just another pastime. I (to the best of my recollection) did not watch a single sports game last year; I went through all of 2005 (again, to the best of my recollection) without playing a single video game. A very talented musician friend of mine grew up in a household where her parents didn’t own a stereo and very rarely listened to music in the house. Music, to me, is like oxygen, but some people don’t feel that way. I find that the older I get, the more I encounter people who say, “Oh, I don’t really read.”

It doesn’t surprise me at all, but it does completely horrify me!

It doesn’t surprise me, given the population I work with, but it does make me sad because people aren’t not reading simply because they don’t enjoy it. Many people don’t know that they enjoy reading, mostly because there are too many other “easier” things to do to detract our attention. Personally, I never know I enjoyed reading until this past year, really, when a certain unnamed someone unintentionally and involuntarily challenged me to read fifty books in a year. Now I’m wondering how I’ll ever put the darn things down! At least I’m helping with those slumping sales figures, though ;-)
